Wetland Forums

AMD and wetlands

So often we are confronted with queries relating to mines and wetlands, and we all know that mines do have a negative impact on wetlands. A prime example of just such an impact was recently viewed in the Carolina district.

wetland impacted by Acid Mine DrainageThe wetland in question is situated below a coal washing plant and its pollution control dam. It seems that during the past rainy season a breach of sort occurred, resulting in polluted water entering the wetland.
This runoff resulted in an accumulation of salts and possible other pollutants. The wetland then reached its saturation point, after which it was unable to cope any more with the pollution. The nett result was the total destruction of the wetland.
