To mark the start of the Copenhagen Climate Negotiations, a week of Climate Activism in Johanesburg has also kicked off with a bang - and is getting stronger - as preparations mount for a "Big Day of Action" outside the Gauteng Legislature on Saturday the 12th December. |

"Given that climate change is the biggest threat to our planet as we know it, the decisions made in the next few weeks by these leaders may well be the most significant decisions of our time. The only decisions that would be morally acceptable and scientifically sound would be much more stringent, legally binding targets for radically reduced greenhouse gas emissions, for ALL of the planet’s major emitters, South Africa included," says Yolan Friedmann CEO of Endangered Wildlife Trust (EWT). |

Green Goal or Green Wash? |

A Green Goal 2010 programme has been launched ahead of the World Cup spectacle to ensure that the event is environmentally friendly. The pledge stated that they would all support initiatives which addressed waste minimisation, emission reduction, energy efficiency and water conservation.
But environmentalists are skeptical. "FIFA will proclaim their event to have been carbon neutral, whether or not they can prove it".

The Thukela is the largest river system in KwaZulu-Natal. A study on the “Payment for Ecosystem Services (PES)” conducted by Maloti-Drakensberg Transfrontier Project (MDTP) indicated that about 15% of the Upper Thukela Catchment was used for agriculture, temporary commercial irrigated agriculture, and commercial forestry. The study also revealed that the upper reaches of the Thukela river system are dominated by grasslands. |

Not strictly South African environmental news, but significant enough to post - NASA Scientist Anthony Colaprete confirmed there is water - lots of it - on the moon. The discovery ends the perception of the moon being "a rather dead and unchanging world". |
