The Department of Water Affairs (DWA) as part of the Government Task Team on mine closure and water management together with mining companies have agreed on a model to deal with the Acid Mine Drainage (AMD) challenge that is affecting the Western, Central and Eastern Basins (the Witwatersrand gold fields area) which is impacting mainly on the Vaal and the Crocodile River systems.

"I have visited the decant area within the West Rand Basin today with the news media.  What we have feared, has now happened." says Mariette Liefferink CEO of the Federation for a Sustainable Environment.  "A significant volume of untreated Acid Mine Drainage is flowing on surface into the catchments".

Government Creating Opportunity for Private Landowners To Become Protectors of National Biodiversity

South Africa has official structures in place to promote its unique biodiversity, but conserving much of this biodiversity depends on individuals and communities that have the vision and determination to do the job.  This is the view of Helen Duigan, chairperson of the Rhenosterspruit Nature Conservancy (RNC), the first conservancy in what is now Gauteng.  A conservancy is a voluntary association of landowners who get together to conserve and restore, where relevant, the area in which they live.
